Geographic Conditions of Our Region

Soil Types

  • The dominant soil is **Regur or Black Cotton Soil**, derived from decomposed lava rocks (basalt).
  • This soil is rich in iron, clayey, and highly moisture-retentive, making it suitable for crops like cotton and sugarcane.
  • River valleys often have **alluvial and highly fertile** soils.
  • In the Maval and higher plateau areas, soils can be laterite or gravelly.

Climate and Rainfall

  • The region has a **tropical monsoon climate**, generally hot and dry, especially away from the Ghats.
  • The **Western Ghats** cause a **Rain-Shadow Effect**.
  • The Konkan side (west of the Ghats) gets heavy rainfall, while the immediate plateau region (Desh) is in the rain-shadow, receiving significantly lower rainfall.
  • Annual rainfall varies highly: areas on the crest and western Ghats receive over **3000 mm**, but much of the plateau (e.g., Solapur, Ahmednagar) is a dry zone with meagre rainfall (**600 mm to 700 mm**).
  • Seasons include **hot, dry summers** (March-May), the **monsoon season** (June-September), and **cool, dry winters** (December-February).
